AIMC (Association for Media Research) has presented the results of the 2nd Wave of the General Media Study (EGM) , which collects the results of the field work carried out from April 5 to June 13, 2017.

In the 1st Wave of the EGM in 2012, the section on internet access for children under 14 years of age was included for the first time. Since then, internet access for children aged 4 to 13 has been incorporated in order to provide a complete reference of internet users to comScore, the company that provides data on internet consumption in Spain.

In this age group, penetration was initially 57.4% (2012). Five years later, this penetration has grown to 64.2% of children who connect to the Internet from all types of rich people data devices according to data provided in the 2nd Wave 2017.

This is how internet access penetration has evolved by age since 2012:

The study also shows that inclusion in the Internet world has increased especially among younger ages and has remained more or less stable from age 9 onwards.

In the first data from 2012, girls led in internet access with a penetration of 60% compared to 54% for boys. In the 2nd Wave 2017 the gap remains, although somewhat smaller, 65.5% for girls and 63.1% for boys.

The 13-year-old age group has a 92% penetration rate, equal to their “older siblings” (14 to 19 years old) with 95% internet access.

As for adults, the evolution of Internet penetration in this same period has been as follows:

Overall, internet penetration has gone from 59.5% to 79.6%. Growth has been very small up to the age of 34, as they started from a fairly high inclusion rate, exceeding 80% in all cases and now around 95%.

The oldest, aged 55 and over, have almost doubled their growth, with the first group ranging from 55 to 64 years of age having an internet penetration of 80%, while, despite the increase, the pensioners are still below 40%. This gives clues as to which group should be targeted with policies to promote internet access.
