Google revealed on Wednesday that it has blocked more than eight million ads related to the war in Ukraine and removed ads from more than 60 websites of media outlets funded by the Russian state.

Google said it set a "sensitive event" status in relation to the war at the start of the conflict, banning ads from profiting from or exploiting the situation.

This is in addition to its policies prohibiting content that incites violence or denies the occurrence of tragic events from being posted as ads or monetized using its services.

It has also taken other steps to halt most of its business activities in Russia, including stopping ads from being shown in Russia.

It has also blocked ads from Russia-based advertisers, and halted the monetization of Russian state-funded media outlets on its platforms.

Under its ad policy, Google removed mint data more than 3.4 billion ads, restricted more than 5.7 billion ads, and suspended more than 5.6 million advertiser accounts in 2021.

Google has detected an increase in fraudulent activity during the pandemic. In 2021, fraudulent advertisers have operated with greater sophistication and scale, using a variety of tactics to evade control.

This included creating thousands of accounts simultaneously and using techniques such as cloaking and text manipulation to show their reviewers and systems different advertising content than they would show a user, making that content harder to detect and enforce.
