The health crisis in our country has affected all sectors in different ways. The photovoltaic consumption sector has not been any different, but it has already started working to solve the obstacles that have arisen from the pandemic. Also, at the VII Solar Forum organized by UNEF, experts analyzed what our country needs to become a self-consumption power and the challenges it faces.

Self-consumption in times of COVID-19

Like the vast majority of sectors, the photovoltaic sector president email lists has suffered the consequences of the economic downturn resulting from the pandemic caused by COVID-19. This is a consequence of the strong impact that this crisis has had on SMEs and service companies, which in turn are the main demanders of self-consumption in the country. This has caused, in many cases, self-consumption to no longer be seen as a priority.

Despite all this, the Spanish Photovoltaic Union has set to work to solve this problem that is slowing down the installation of self-consumption. This, in addition to being detrimental at an environmental level, distances companies and self-employed people from the economic benefits of using renewable energies.

Solutions for photovoltaic self-consumption

At an administrative level, one of the main obstacles to the deployment of collective self-consumption is the Horizontal Property Law, which hinders progress in projects carried out in communities of neighbors. This is due to the large amount of bureaucratic procedures that are requested by municipal entities and which, in addition, have levels of demand that do not correspond to the real characteristics of these projects. For this reason, projects can be delayed up to six months.

So, is there a solution? Of course there is. On the one hand, at the municipal level, UNEF is working, community by community, to achieve the repeal of the building permit requirement and for it to be replaced by responsible communication. This has already been achieved in eight autonomous communities and in May 2020 it was proposed for the rest of the CCAA. On the other hand, a series of training activities are being launched for the technical managers of the municipalities, so that they know the characteristics and know what they should really demand from these projects.

At the national level, work is being done to regulate the dynamic coefficients for self-consumption, which allow users to exchange their occasional surpluses, which is essential to be able to launch self-consumption on a large scale in our country. The Government planned to review the regulations as soon as the state of alarm due to the coronavirus ended in May 2020.

Advantages of continuing to invest in self-consumption

Although the pandemic has shaken our lives to a greater or lesser extent, there have been some companies that have not been so directly affected by the consequences of the crisis, which has allowed them to continue with the course of their investments. In this way, some of them have found the time to invest in self-consumption and thus benefit from the economic and environmental advantages it offers. As the General Director of UNEF says: “If you have savings in the bank, they won't give you anything, however, if you opt for the installation of photovoltaic panels in your home, this can give you a double-digit return that no financial asset will give you .
