The Maya Train project seeks to connect the main cities and tourist areas of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.
The Maya Train project was launched in 2018 by the skype database president of the Mexican government, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and developed by the National Fund for Tourism Development (FONATUR).
According to the official brochure, the project aims to promote tourism in different areas of the country and avoid concentration in one place . This economic growth, this document stresses, must be achieved without harming the environment .
Promoting social inclusion and job creation is another objective linked to the initiative. The means of transport will cover approximately 1,500 kilometres, with 19 stations that will maintain the identity of the region.
The social axes on which the project is based include gender equality and consultation with the indigenous population . Regarding this last aspect, the project emphasizes that last year interviews were conducted with authorities and institutions belonging to the Maya, Ch'ol, Tseltal and Tsotil indigenous peoples, among others.
The implementation of this project would not be without problems. The increase in visitors would cause “an increase in the demand for water (which would be taken from the subsoil, which feeds the cenotes), waste management (which will create new landfills), and land for construction,” says the Plataforma Arquitectura website .
All those professionals who wish to expand their experience in the field of architecture and urban planning, so that they can develop projects in this area, will be able to achieve their goal with the university programs sponsored by FUNIBER . One of the courses offered is the Master's Degree in Architecture and Urban Planning Projects .
