Restoring chats from a WhatsApp database is a common need, especially after switching phones or reinstalling the app. Fortunately, WhatsApp provides both local and cloud-based solutions depending on your device.
For Android Devices:
Using Google Drive Backup:
Ensure you're using the same Google account and phone number.
Reinstall WhatsApp.
Open it, verify your number.
When prompted, tap "Restore" to recover chats and media from Google Drive.
Using Local Backup:
WhatsApp creates a local backup every night.
Navigate to: Internal Storage > WhatsApp > Databases
Rename the most recent file from msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt14 to msgstore.db.crypt14
Reinstall WhatsApp, and
phone list when prompted, tap "Restore"
For iPhone Users:
WhatsApp uses iCloud for backups.
Make sure you’re signed into iCloud and using the same phone number.
Go to WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup to confirm last backup.
Reinstall WhatsApp, verify your number, and tap "Restore Chat History".
Note:
Restoring from a backup replaces all current chat data.
Backups must be recent and uncorrupted.
