Why create an editorial calendar?
To serve your marketing strategy in terms of notoriety and reap an interesting return on investment, the creation of quality content must be skillfully orchestrated.

The editorial calendar comes after defining your digital strategy and your editorial line. It allows you to:


Plan your web marketing strategy effectively: you keep a publication rhythm and avoid failures. All topics are decided over several months for foolproof organization and to avoid running out of things to say. Your blog even remains active during your vacation thanks to scheduled publication. If there are several of you writing, this allows you to distribute the topics between the collaborators.
Simplify blog post writing: editorial management is simpler whether you manage the writing internally or entrust this mission to web editors. No lack of inspiration, everything is decided and can be written in advance. You can anticipate, move, resolve an unforeseen event... All you have to do is refer to the tool!
Ensure better monitoring of your content marketing strategy: everything is written over several months, or even a year (that's even better). For social media, you are free to add columns (at the risk of having a long table) or create another Excel document.

For my part, I often use the Excel table (Google Sheet in this case) that you will find as a model. But I mainly adapt to the habits of my clients and I modify the basic model according to the needs.

So the editorial calendar is infinitely customizable depending on what you need. Here are the essential elements for me:


The date of publication
The title of the article
The theme
The url
The main keyword
Its monthly search volume
The targets (B2B, B2C, women, men, etc.), the personas targeted
Status: in progress, written, published
The positioning of the main keyword (to be checked regularly)

You can also add the name of the writer if there are several of you writing content, the type of content written if you also use your editorial plan for videos and visual content, the number of words written, the number of visuals added, etc.



Tools to create your editorial calendar
You have the choice! Trello , Notion or Asana . I have a preference for Excel (Google Sheet) and Notion. For some of my clients, Excel is often easier to use since they already know it.


It's better to save time and reduce the mental load by sparing them from having to learn yet another new tool. At least you can be sure that everyone knows how to use Excel, unless they've been living in a cave since the late 1980s (yes, the first version of Excel came out in 1985

But I often use Notion which has interesting features (especially for internal meshing).


Afterwards, you are free to choose the tool you prefer. The important thing is not there but in the creation of your editorial calendar in line with your marketing objectives and your target audience.
