A few days ago, Elon Musk shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) of Kamala Harris whose voice had been faked using artificial intelligence . In the video, the US presidential candidate announces, among other things, that she will finally replace Joe Biden because he proved to be senile in the debate. The reality is that this video was originally posted as a parody by a YouTuber who calls himself “MrReaganUSA”, who did tag it as such.
The problem comes when Elon Musk doesn't do this when he shares it on X without any context. The businessman only commented "this is incredible," along with a laughing emoji. Many users understood that Musk was referring to the fact that the montage was surprising and that he found it funny. But on the other hand, many others 'denounced' that he should have indicated that it was a parody or that AI had come into play, since there are people who could believe that Kamala Harris actually said that, spread it as such or even change their voting decision based on something false . In addition, this fact goes against the rules of his own social network.
The shadow of AI in politics: the case of the manipulated video of Kamala Harris
This episode has sparked a wave of concern about the potential of AI to deceive, three months before the presidential elections in a country like the United States . The video has attracted the attention of millions after Elon Musk shared it without clarifying that Kamala Harris had never uttered such words, since what seems obvious to many may be invisible to others.
The reach of such influential figures as Elon Musk is out of the ordinary, and in this case, Harris' parody was widely disseminated without a clear context. The crux of the matter in this whole affair is not that AI-generated parodies exist, but what they can cause if they are not labeled as such . That is why Harris campaign spokeswoman Mia Ehrenberg responded forcefully via an email to the Associated Press, emphasizing that American citizens deserve the truth and not the manipulated lies circulating on the networks.
Still, Chris Kohls, the man behind Mr. Reagan, defended his video as an obvious parody , although AI-generated media experts warned of the potential danger of such manipulations.
Is stricter regulation of AI-generated content on social media necessary?
As AI tools become more accessible, the need for clear and effective regulations becomes more urgent. Meanwhile, platforms like YouTube have implemented policies requiring creators to disclose whether they have used generative AI, under threat of suspension if they fail to do so. The current situation makes it clear that, in the digital age, the line between parody and misinformation is thinner than ever , and the responsibility for drawing it falls on both content creators and the platforms that host them.
