The large language models (LLMs) that power AI need to be fed with vast amounts of data. In the AI field, it is always US-based companies that lead the way, but German railway company Deutsche Bahn and Schwarz Gruppe, the parent company of Lidl, have teamed up to give AI a boost in Europe by launching a platform called “DataHub Europe”.
This platform , presented this week in Frankfurt (Germany) at the DE.DIGITAL event, is specifically designed to make the training of AI models easier and also safer. Behind this project are Schwarz Digits, the digital division of Schwarze Gruppe ( Lidl and Kaufland), and Deutsche Bahn.
DataHub Europe is emerging with the ultimate goal of using the data contained in this platform to “train AI models on a more secure infrastructure” and then quickly and securely integrate specific artificial intelligence solutions into multiple business applications within companies. “DataHub Europe will close an important gap in the European Union by making quality data available to companies for training AI models,” stresses Volker Wissing, Germany’s Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport. “This platform will take AI model training in our industry to the next level,” he asserts.
Although the project is led by Deutsche Bahn and Schwarze Gruppe, the platform is supported by a number of different players. The data stored on the DataHub Europe platform is supplied by the renowned German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and DvH Medien ( Wirtschaftswoche and Handelsblatt ), among other publishers. And on the technological side, the platform is supported by the AI specialist company Aleph Alpha, the cloud computing service provider Stackit, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and the Technical University of Darmstadt.
With the help of “DataHub Europe”, Germany wants to give wings to its leadership in the field of AI
The German government stresses that "DataHub Europe" is only the first of many initiatives that will be implemented in the coming years with the ultimate goal of making Germany the leading country in AI on European soil.
