Connect the new footing to the existing one: Those two pieces of vertical rebar help lock together two different concrete pours. You start the footing with a footer. DEAR TIM: I am building an addition on my home philippines email list and realize that I need to connect the new foundation to the existing one. What is the best way to do this? Is there any way to waterproof the connection?

Will this connection become a hinge point in the future that will cause cracks in the walls? I am very concerned about how to make a connection between the structures that will stand the test of time. Paul M., Orono, MN

DEAR PAUL: I remember having these same thoughts many years ago when I was building my first room addition. I couldn't imagine how the shallow crawl space foundation would remain connected to the full basement foundation since they were at different elevations.

My geology professors would have frowned at me if they had been in the workplace. I wasn't thinking about how to connect the new foundation to the existing one.
