Goat tree reserve
The Goat Tree Reserve is one of the island’s bird sanctuaries. This park features “goat trees,” ancient oak trees whose branches extend up to 50 feet from the trunk and run almost parallel to the ground. According to local legend, they provided shelter for the island’s wild goats who climbed them at night to rest safe from the alligators that roamed the area.

Indian Shell Mound Park, or simply called Shell Mound Park, is a park and bird sanctuary. Mounds of discarded oyster shells, also known as shell mittens, were found there dating back to between 1100 and 1550. Native Americans in the area harvested oysters and fished in the area.
