How do I change my phone number on WhatsApp?

Post by liza89 »

You can change the phone number associated with your WhatsApp account using the app's built-in "Change Number" feature. This process allows you to migrate your account information, including your profile photo, name, "About" information, individual chats, group chats, and settings, to your new phone number. The WhatsApp account linked to your old phone number will be deleted in the process.

Here's a step-by-step guide on how to change your phone number on WhatsApp:

Before You Begin:

Ensure your new phone number can receive SMS messages or phone calls. WhatsApp will need to verify the new number.
Make sure your old phone number is currently registered on WhatsApp on your phone. You can check this by opening WhatsApp, tapping the three dots (or "Settings" on iPhone), then tapping your profile photo. Your registered number will be displayed.
Have your new SIM card inserted into your phone if you are using the same device.
Ensure you have a stable internet connection (Wi-Fi is recommended).
Consider backing up your chats before changing your number to prevent any potential data loss. You can do this in WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
Steps to Change Your Phone Number on the Same Phone:

Open WhatsApp: Launch the WhatsApp application on your phone.
Go to Settings:
Android: Tap the three vertical dots (Menu) in the top right belarus mobile phone number list corner and select "Settings."
iPhone: Tap "Settings" at the bottom right corner.
Tap "Account": In the Settings menu, select "Account."
Tap "Change number": You will see a "Change number" option. Tap on it.
Tap "Next": A screen will appear explaining what happens when you change your number. Tap "Next" to proceed.
Enter Your Old and New Phone Numbers:
In the first field, enter your old phone number (the one currently associated with your WhatsApp account).
In the second field, enter your new phone number.
Important: Enter both phone numbers in full international format (including the country code). For Bangladesh, the country code is +880.
Tap "Next": After entering both numbers, tap "Next."
Notify Contacts (Optional): You will be asked if you want to notify your contacts about your number change. You can choose from:
All contacts: Notifies all your WhatsApp contacts.
Contacts I have chats with: Notifies only the contacts you have existing chat threads with.
Custom...: Allows you to select specific contacts to notify.
You can toggle this option on or off. Your group chats will be automatically notified regardless of your choice here.
Tap "Done": After selecting your notification preference (or choosing not to notify), tap "Done."
Verify Your New Phone Number: WhatsApp will now prompt you to verify your new phone number. You will receive a 6-digit verification code via SMS. Enter this code when prompted to complete the number change process.
Changing Phone Number on a New Phone:

If you are also switching to a new phone, the process is slightly different:

Backup Your Chats on Your Old Phone: Before doing anything on your new phone, back up your WhatsApp chats on your old phone (Settings > Chats > Chat Backup). For Android, you can back up to Google Drive; for iPhone, you can back up to iCloud.
Insert Your New SIM Card into Your New Phone.
Install WhatsApp on Your New Phone.
Register Your New Phone Number: Open WhatsApp on your new phone and follow the on-screen instructions to register your new phone number.
Restore Your Backup: During the registration process, WhatsApp will detect your existing backup and prompt you to restore your chats and media. Tap "Restore."
Important Notes:

You cannot change your phone number on WhatsApp Web or WhatsApp Desktop. You must do it on your primary mobile device.
If you change your phone number and continue using the same WhatsApp account, your blocked contacts will remain blocked and will not be notified of your number change if you choose not to notify contacts.
If you change your phone number in error, there is no way to revert this change.
By following these steps, you can successfully change the phone number associated with your WhatsApp account while retaining your important chats and account information. Remember to inform your important contacts about your new number, even if you choose to notify them through WhatsApp, to ensure they update their address books.
