It’s very easy for people to trust data. Maybe too easy. A 2018 study from Stanford University showed that people are 70% more likely to trust claims that contain a number than those that don’t.
Even more alarming, nearly 60% of participants believed a false headline that contained a statistic, compared to only 40% who believed the same headline without the statistic.
And here's the really surprising thing: none of those last two paragraphs, except for the first two sentences, were true. To my knowledge, there was no Stanford study, and I made up those numbers. That hyperlink is actually a link to the infamous 1982 Cal/Stanford "band on the field" game.
While I'm not so sorry I misled you, it does illustrate the point: Numbers (and people) can definitely distort the truth. In the world of content marketing, we see a lot of misleading numbers that try to build trust with the audience. Even scarier, many content producers don't even realize they're doing it.
Not sure what I mean? I'll show you with my favorite example: Google Trends.
Three basic rules for (honest) data analysis
If you're not familiar, Google Trends is an amazing tool that lets you look at the relative search volume of anything. For example, I wanted to know when "Old Town Road" started ruining my life, so I pulled up a graph of interest over the last year.
Rely on Google Trends data - SEMrush
Pretty intuitive, right? According to this chart, the hit peaked around mid-April 2019. For context, the Billy Ray Cyrus remix was released on April 5, 2019, so Trends checks that out.
And you will see a list of invalid lines in the file.
